In late 2009, Anue Systems commissioned Enterprise Management Associates to field a survey of network operations and security professionals, focused on uncovering their biggest challenges and frustrations with out-of-band / passive monitoring tools and techniques. Response was very good, and the results confirmed several challenges that we suspected were becoming commonplace in enterprises today.

Key findings included:

81% are unable to achieve the desired level of monitoring coverage to meet business needs and requirements
The key reasons for this problem are a lack of access to desired network traffic, sub-optimal tool deployments, and a lack of staff availability and/or skills
Most companies employ filtering when sending data to monitoring tools,
80% of respondents reported that filter management is difficult, particularly with solutions that employ command line interfaces for filter management
The transition to 10Gigabit Ethernet is under way, and it has introduced new challenges that must be addressed
