Security and IT in 2010

Heading into the New Year, we have seen a slew of reviews for 2009 and previews of what various experts and pundits think will happen this year. On this very blog, we have even chimed in on several of the more interesting takes that we’ve seen out in the blogosphere and on the web itself. But what we haven’t done is give our take on where we think the big stories will come in 2010, so let’s attack that angle now.

In 2010, I predict we will see more of…

Predictions for 2010: Breaking Down IDC’s Take for Data Centers and Service Providers

Continuing our end of year review of the various predictions from IT and networking thought leaders, today we turn our attention to IDC. For those of us who have been in high tech since the early 90s (or longer), IDC is a well-known entity. I remember working with them directly back in my days of fab planning and market research at Advanced Micro Devices, and they always offered a spin that made me take pause when interpreting trends and new developments.

A Look Inside Security Tools (ALIST): Bill Roth of LogLogic

After a one-week hiatus for the Thanksgiving holiday (and we hope you liked our “MeThinks” entry), we turn our attention back to the ALIST series. For those of you who are familiar with the SIEM space, you should already know about LogLogic. Bill Roth, their new CMO, has graciously agreed to take part in the ALIST series. As a quick aside from our focus on SEs and Technical Marketing types, let’s get the viewpoint from the executive suite.

A Look Inside Security Tools (ALIST): Johnnie Konstantas of Altor Networks

After our one-week hiatus from the ALIST series, we turn our attention back here to profile a key executive at Altor Networks. Johnnie Konstantas has a long track record of technical and marketing leadership success at leading companies such as Juniper Networks, CheckPoint, and most recently, Varonis Systems. Now, she leads the charge to market Altor Networks’ virtualization security products. Let’s get right to the interview…

Security Pros on Twitter (SPoT): Michael R. Farnum / @m1a1vet

Welcome to today’s entry in the ongoing SPoT series. Today, we are covering someone who serves a different role in security, Michael R. Farnum, who is a Pre-Sales Security Engineer for a VAR / Consulting company. Most of our SPoTs to date have been client-side practitioners, but that is most certainly not a requirement to be considered a “Security Pro”. Mr. Farnum is also known for his role in An Information Security Place, a blog which offers insightful security podcasts a minimum of once each month. The podcast discusses a range of topics, including hacking, security breaches, PCI, vulnerabilities, security/compliance audits, and cybersecurity.

Security Pros on Twitter (SPoT): Alex Hutton/@AlexHutton

Welcome to our ninth installment of Security Pros on Twitter. This week, we are featuring Alex Hutton, who “works in Risk Intelligence for a Fortune-something company”, according to his profile on The New School of Information Security blog, where Alex is one of the main contributors of content. The blog shares its name with a 2008 book authored by blog founders Adam Shostack and Andrew Stewart, and they are joined by some savvy security pros including Alex, David Mortman, and Brooke Paul. Mr. Hutton has been involved in security since the early ’90s, and we are very glad to profile him as a SPoT.

Security Pros on Twitter (SPoT): Jeff Kirsch/@GhostNomad

We hope you enjoyed our previous interview with Jack Daniel. We’ve profiled some heavy hitters and thought leaders in the Security Scene, but there are a range of security professionals on Twitter with something interesting and important to say. In an effort to share a well-rounded range of SPs, today we turn our attention to a gentleman who caught our attention early in our tenure in the Twitter-sphere: Jeff Kirsch (a.k.a. @ghostnomad).

Security Pros on Twitter (SPoT): Jennifer Jabbusch/@jjx

We hope you enjoyed reading about Erin Jacobs last week. In this edition of SPoT, we offer you another respected security professional, and one who comes highly recommended by Ms. Jacobs – Jennifer Jabbusch.

Security Pros on Twitter (SPoT): Justin Foster/@justin_foster

As the second installment of our SPoT series, The Network View turns our attention to another Canadian Security Pro, Justin Foster (@justin_foster). Mr. Foster is employed by Trend Micro during working hours, and he also maintains his own independent blog, Developing Security. Go check out his Top 10 signs you are a Security Twit post from June 2009 for a quick chuckle. On that note…

Security Pros on Twitter (SPoT): James Arlen/@myrcurial

Beginning this week, we are kicking off our new SPOT (Security Pros on Twitter) series, profiling security professionals who are present and active on Twitter. We will profile one SP each week through the rest of the summer.

Since Anue Systems (@AnueSystems) first joined in on the Twitter fun, we have followed and interacted with a variety of folks, and these are the thought leaders who we’d turn to first with a specific, hands-on question regarding security of the internal network, the cloud, or even virtualized environments.

Without further ado, let’s get to it…
